Water is life
Have you ever thought that the Tana River is more than just a river? It is a livelihood, a culture, a language – and a bond between people and nature. For many, the Tana River is their lifeblood.
In Sami culture, this is expressed as cáhcilea eallin – water is life. It contains a fundamental understanding of water's role as a prerequisite for all life. Water is more than a natural resource. It is a living element with its own value and power.
When the water changes, so does the life in it. The expression points to a Sami view of nature where humans are not above nature, but are part of it. Taking care of the water and the landscape means taking care of ourselves.
